When does the hunger come back after stopping a GLP-1?

We read 4,014 posts from people coming off a GLP-1. When they say the hunger came back, when it eased, and what the people holding their weight did.

Key takeaways

  • Of the people in our dataset who had stopped and said when the hunger came back, the median was 4 weeks after the last dose. The middle half put it between 2 and 6.5 weeks.
  • The people who said when it eased put that at a median of 8.5 weeks, with the middle half between 6 and 11.5 weeks.
  • That fits how long the drugs take to clear. Semaglutide stays in circulation for about 5 to 7 weeks, and tirzepatide's half-life is about 5 to 6 days.
  • Not everyone gets it. Eight people said the hunger still hadn't come back two months or more after stopping.
  • People holding their weight mentioned tracking what they eat, protein, meal structure and lifting far more often than people regaining. Those are self-reports, not proof of cause.

The short answer

For most people who describe it, the hunger comes back about a month after the last dose and settles about two months after that.

We read 4,014 posts and comments from people coming off a GLP-1 (how we built the dataset). Of them, 119 people who had stopped described when their hunger changed. The 48 who said when it came back put it a median of 4 weeks after the last dose, with the middle half between 2 and 6.5 weeks. The 16 who said when it eased put that at a median of 8.5 weeks, with the middle half between 6 and 11.5 weeks.

When people say the hunger came back and eased after their last GLP-1 dose. Each dot is one person. Came back, 48 people, median 4 weeks. Eased, 16 people, median 8.5 weeks.

Those numbers are what people report, not a measured result. No published study has tracked when appetite returns after people stop these drugs, so this is the closest thing to a timeline that exists.

Why the hunger comes back

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after you eat, and it's one of the signals that tells your brain you've had enough. The drugs copy it. The Wegovy label calls GLP-1 "a physiological regulator of appetite and caloric intake," and notes that its receptor sits in several areas of the brain involved in appetite (Wegovy prescribing information, section 12.1).

The effect on eating is large. In a 20-week trial, people on semaglutide 2.4 mg ate 35% less at an all-you-can-eat lunch than people on a placebo, and reported fewer and weaker food cravings (Friedrichsen 2021).

When the drug clears, that signal goes back to what your own gut makes. There's a second force too. Weight loss itself pushes appetite up. In a study of diet-driven weight loss, people still had higher levels of ghrelin (the hormone that makes you hungry), lower leptin (the one that signals you're fed) and more hunger a full year later (Sumithran 2011). So the hunger after stopping is the drug wearing off on top of a body that's already asking for more food. That may be why so many people describe it as stronger than anything they remember from before.

How long each drug takes to clear

Ozempic or Wegovy (semaglutide)

Semaglutide has a half-life of about one week. The Wegovy label says it stays in circulation for about 5 to 7 weeks after the last 2.4 mg injection or 25 mg tablet (Wegovy prescribing information, section 12.3). Ozempic is the same molecule.

Zepbound or Mounjaro (tirzepatide)

Tirzepatide's half-life is about 5 to 6 days in people with overweight or obesity (Zepbound prescribing information, section 12.3). The label doesn't give a clearance window. A drug is mostly gone after about five half-lives, which works out to roughly four weeks. That's our arithmetic, not the label's.

Most of the people who described their timing and named their drug were on tirzepatide (80 of 93), so the 4-week median fits the drug most of them were taking. Of the 23 who had stopped tirzepatide and said when the hunger came back, the median was 3 weeks. Too few people gave a date after stopping semaglutide to compare the two.

When people say it came back

When the hunger came back People
In the first week 4
Weeks 1 to 2 5
Weeks 2 to 4 14
Weeks 4 to 6 10
Weeks 6 to 8 5
Week 8 or later 10
Total who gave a date 48

Most (35 of 48) said it came back within six weeks. About one in five said it held off for eight weeks or longer before it arrived.

"3 weeks after my last dose I got SO BLOODY HUNGRY. I'd be having hunger pangs after a meal." (r/GLPGrad)

"At around 5-6 weeks after the last dose, I went from feeling “rough but I’m managing” to eating about 2,500-3,000 and still feeling starving." (r/GLPGrad)

"For the first couple of months after stopping, everything seemed fine. [...] But around three months later the rebound appetite hit me" (r/GLPGrad)

Some people didn't see it coming. "The thing that shocked me most wasn't the weight gain itself, it was the return of the food noise" (r/GLPGrad).

People who stepped down a dose or stretched the gap between doses noticed it sooner. The 19 who gave a date put it a median of about 11 days after the change.

When it eased

Only 16 people said when the hunger settled, which is a small number, so read this part as a rough guide. Their median was 8.5 weeks after the last dose, and 14 of the 16 put it between week 6 and week 13.

"Finally, on Day 42 the hunger is starting to return to pre-tirz days. I'd say 70% of what it used to be. Much more tolerable than days 14-28." (r/GLPGrad)

"That period lasted about 3 months, now my appetite has normalised again." (r/GLPGrad)

Another 47 people described the hunger as still strong at some point after stopping, at a median of 5 weeks. That's the stretch people describe as the hardest.

Not everyone gets it

Eight people said the hunger still hadn't come back two months or more after stopping, and two of them were a year or more out. "I've been off Mounjaro for one year now, have been able to maintain my weight, the food noise remains very well suppressed" (r/GLPGradUK). They're a minority of the people who described their timing, but they're real. One of them had still regained 30 lb by six months with no food noise at all, so the hunger isn't the only thing that moves the scale.

What people holding their weight did about it

Across the posts that mention the hunger coming back, we compared people who said they were holding their weight (172) with people who said they were regaining (116). This is what each group said they did.

What they said they did Holding their weight Regaining
Tracked what they ate 23% 9%
Ate more protein 21% 4%
Lifted weights 16% 4%
Ate on a schedule or prepped meals 14% 3%
Added fiber, often psyllium 10% 3%
Walked or counted steps 10% 4%

These are things people chose to mention, not a trial. People who are doing well may simply say more about what they do. Read the table as a list of what holders reach for, not proof that any one habit does the holding.

Here's how they describe it, with the research where there is some.

  • Eat enough. "YOU HAVE TO EAT to feel full. Undereating or trying to restrict calories will lead to binging later." (r/GLPGrad) Months of eating very little can leave you aiming too low, and hunger that's ignored all day tends to land at night.
  • Track it so you can see it. "calorie tracking is key. Hunger will come back and it was super helpful for me to see how many calories were actually going in." (r/GLPGrad)
  • Build meals around protein. Protein is more filling than fat or carbohydrate, and diets with 1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg of body weight a day, about 25 to 30 g a meal, improve appetite control and weight management (Leidy 2015).
  • Eat on a schedule. "Food noise has been back for almost 2 months now. Eating on a schedule helps." (r/GLPGrad)
  • Add fiber. "Psyllium husk drinks before meals have helped taking the edge off and the uber-hunger is now slowly subsiding after 2 months." (r/GLPGrad)
  • Keep trigger foods out of the house. "The trick for me is to not have too many yummy snacks in the house, cause I'll eat them all at once." (r/GLPGrad)
  • Protect your sleep. Two nights of four-hour sleep raised ghrelin 28% and hunger 24% in healthy young men (Spiegel 2004). Short nights make the hungry weeks harder.
  • Keep lifting. In the dataset, lifting is the habit people holding their weight mention most. In a trial that followed people for a year after treatment ended, the group that had done a year of supervised exercise regained 6 kg less than the group that had taken liraglutide alone (Jensen 2024).
  • Know it eases. "The hunger came on at the 5 week mark after quitting the shot, and it subsided by about weeks 11-12." (r/GLPGrad) Knowing the hard stretch has an end makes it easier to hold your habits through it.

If you haven't stopped yet

The weeks before your last dose are the easiest time to set these habits up, because the drug is still holding your appetite down. Some people who held their weight describe using that time this way.

"What I did do was use the breathing space mounjaro gave me to learn about nutrition and how to fuel my body and ultimately fix my broken relationship with food." (r/GLPGrad)

Then they kept going when the hunger arrived. "After stopping Mounjaro, I carried on with the same diet and exercise habits, resisting the wave of hunger that hit me about 6 weeks later." (r/GLPGrad)

Tapering, spacing doses and going back on

People holding their weight also mentioned tapering slowly more often than people regaining (17% against 4% in the posts above). How and when to step down, stop, or go back on is a decision for you and your prescriber, and this guide doesn't give dose advice. What you can bring to that conversation is a clear record of your weight trend, what you're eating and how hungry you've been at each step.

Where Leanos fits

Leanos is an iPhone app for the tracking side of this. You log meals from a photo or by typing what you ate, it sets a protein target from your lean mass, and the Progress screen sets this week's average weight against last week's, so a few days of water weight don't read as regain. The calorie target starts 500 calories under maintenance, so if you're holding your weight, add those back in Settings. A coach answers questions from your own meals, steps, lifts and weight. Leanos gives no dose advice, and no trial has tested whether an app like it changes how much weight comes back.

How we got these numbers

The dataset is 4,014 posts and comments from October 2025 to October 2026, mostly from r/GLPGrad and other communities for people coming off, coded against a written codebook. For this guide, we re-read the full text of every Reddit item, pulled the 487 where a hunger word sat near a length of time, and recorded only first-person timing counted from the last dose. We dropped posts that looked promotional, duplicates, and people on drugs that aren't approved for weight loss. A hand check of a random sample found 21 of 24 timings coded correctly, and all three misses were removed. The methods page has the full detail and the limits.

Two things to keep in mind. People who post skew toward those having a hard time, and nobody's appetite was measured. These are people describing their own weeks.

Questions people ask

When does hunger come back after stopping Zepbound or Mounjaro?

Both are tirzepatide, which has a half-life of about 5 to 6 days according to the Zepbound label, so most of it is gone within about four weeks of the last dose. Of the 23 people in our dataset who had stopped tirzepatide and said when the hunger came back, the median was 3 weeks.

When does hunger come back after stopping Ozempic or Wegovy?

Both are semaglutide. The Wegovy label says semaglutide stays in circulation for about 5 to 7 weeks after the last dose. Only a handful of people in our dataset gave a date after stopping semaglutide, too few for a number of our own, so the label's clearance time is the better guide.

How long does food noise last after stopping a GLP-1?

Of the 16 people in our dataset who said when the hunger eased, the median was 8.5 weeks after the last dose, and 14 of them put it between week 6 and week 13. That's what people report, not a measured result.

Does everyone get hunger back after stopping a GLP-1?

No. Eight people in our dataset said the hunger hadn't come back two months or more after stopping, and two of them were a year or more out. They're a minority of the people who described their timing.

Is it normal to be ravenous after stopping a GLP-1?

It's one of the most common things people report. A third of the posts we read from people zero to two months off mention the appetite coming back. GLP-1 drugs act on the parts of the brain that regulate appetite, and once the drug clears, a body that has lost weight tends to push hunger up.

  • Ghrelin

The hunger hormone. Steady ghrelin makes a calorie deficit feel like normal hunger. Disrupted ghrelin makes it feel like reactive snacking.

  • Leptin

The satiety hormone. Honest leptin signaling makes a calorie deficit livable. Short sleep and long deficits suppress the signal.

  • Protein

The macronutrient that builds muscle, repairs tissue, and keeps hunger steady between meals.

  • Sleeping

The daily window when your body rebuilds. The foundation under every other lean habit.

  • Strength training

Structured resistance work against a progression. Builds the muscle that makes leanness look right.
