Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a hormone the body produces when UVB light hits skin. The label calls it a vitamin because it can come from food, but the body treats it as a hormone with effects on muscle, bone, immunity, and the endocrine baseline that supports testosterone.

In the lean context, vitamin D is one of the cheapest hormonal levers in the lifestyle. People running low tend to recover slower and get sick more often, and in men low D tracks with lower T. Correcting a deficiency, by sun or supplement, removes a drag on the chemistry that turns gym work into muscle. The fix is small. The drag it removes is steady.

Modern life makes deficiency the default. Indoor work, heavy sunscreen on otherwise-exposed skin, and northern winters all keep levels under what the body needs. A blood test (25-hydroxy vitamin D) is the quickest way to find out, and supplementation is the practical fix for indoor jobs or winter months.

What raises it

  • Sun exposure. UVB on bare skin is the natural source. Midday sun on a forearm and a face does most of the work in spring through fall.
  • Walking. A daily outdoor walk is the simplest delivery mechanism. The vitamin D gets made while the steps get covered.

What lowers it

  • Alcohol. Heavy or chronic drinking impairs the liver conversion of vitamin D to its active form. The same intake produces less usable D.
